PRODUCT
DESCRIPTION:
The Metal Effects Permacoat Acrylic Varnishes are water-based 100% acrylic
sealers especially formulated to seal Metal Effects Metallic Paints
that have been oxidized with Metal Effects Patina Aging Solutions and
Activators. Surfaces in high-traffic areas should be sealed to prevent
rub-off of the patina. Unlike other acrylic varnishes, Permacoat will
form a thin film over reactive surfaces without cracking or yellowing.
Permacoat is properly pH balanced to minimize the color change reactions
that are created on the patinated finish when using other, non-pH balanced
varnishes.
SURFACE
PREPARATION:
Before applying Metal Effects Metallic Paints, the previously coated
surface must be completely clean, dry, and fully cured. If painting
over metal, wood, alkaline, any other reactive surface, or if the type
of surface is unknown, use Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer (AM203)
to properly prime and seal the surface. The Metal Effects Acid Blocking
Primer is especially formulated to block out alkali salts, tannins,
acid salts, or other unwanted contaminates from ‘bleeding through’
to the Metal Effects Metallic Paint film. If unsure of the substrate,
test a sample area to ensure the desired results. (Please see the Metal
Effects Acid Blocking Primer Technical Data Sheet for more information.)
APPLICATION:
Metal Effects Permacoat can be brush, roll, or spray applied. Stir well
before use. Test on a similar surface before applying to the project.
The variegated color of the patina may be affected by top coating. To
reduce this effect, reduce the Permacoat with a 100% addition of water.
Apply lightly with a soft brush suitable for water-based paints, or
spray apply. For interior use, one or two coats are sufficient. For
exterior use, apply two or three coats, allowing at least 30 minutes
dry time between coats.
Note:
When applying over surfaces patinaed with Metal Effects Black Patina
Aging Solution (PA903) or Baroque Activator Solution (PA905), begin
by wiping the surface of the patina with a damp sponge and allow to
dry. Then apply the Metal Effects Permacoat with a soft brush or spray
apply. This added step will help eliminate clouding of the varnish.
Note:
If maximum protection from the harmful effects of UV and weathering
is required, apply Modern Masters MasterClear Polyurethane/Acrylic Interior/Exterior
Topcoat protective overcoat on top of the Permacoat. Do not apply MasterClear
directly onto the patinaed finish. This can alter the color of the patina.
Coverage: 1 gallon/3.78 liters will cover approximately
350 sq. feet/33.6 sq. meters.
Film Properties:
Drying time at 70°F and 50%RH: Re-coat time is in approximately
½ hour. Dry time is in approximately one hour. Full cure is in
approximately 24 hours. Lower temperature and higher humidity will lengthen
the dry and cure times.
Clean Up: Clean brushes, rollers, tools, and equipment
with warm, soapy water immediately after use.
